Quick answer: dress for the music and stand in shoes you have already worn. Country is denim and western boots, rock dark denim, a band tee and boots, pop something that sparkles, hip-hop relaxed streetwear and clean sneakers. Add a layer you can tie round your waist for an outdoor show, and at a stadium carry a clear bag up to 12 × 6 × 12 inches or a clutch up to 4.5 × 6.5.

      How to use it

Pick the music and the venue, tap standing or seated, and type the temperature the forecast gives for showtime (tap °C if you think in Celsius, or just type “18 c”). Tap Rain if it is in the forecast. The answer is the look for that music, the shoes for a night standing or sitting, the layer the weather calls for and the bag your kind of venue lets through the gate, each with the words of the guide or the venue it comes from. Under it are Needle Style’s own outfit posts for that music.

      The look, by the music

Three guides break concert outfits down by genre, and they agree:

      • Country: “Country concerts = cowboy boots, denim, western hats” (Green Wedding Shoes). “Denim and boots suit country shows” (Gigwise). Klodsy adds plaid or chambray shirts and a cowboy hat “especially at outdoor venues”.
      • Rock: “Rock concerts = leather jackets, band tees, edgy boots” (Green Wedding Shoes); “darker layers work for rock concerts” (Gigwise); “Combat boots or Doc Martens” (Klodsy).
      • Pop: “Pop concerts = sequins, bold colors, statement accessories” (Green Wedding Shoes); “metallic pieces fit pop or dance events” (Gigwise); “The crowd tends to dress up more than at any other genre” (Klodsy).
      • Hip-hop and R&B: “Rap concerts = streetwear, baggy jeans, fresh sneakers” (Green Wedding Shoes); “Hip-hop and rap shows tend to favor comfort and a relaxed fit over anything tight or restrictive” (Gigwise); “Fresh, clean sneakers (this is your statement piece)” (Klodsy).
      • Anything else: loose jeans (“our favorite jeans to wear to a concert are loose-fitting and laid-back”, Green Wedding Shoes) and “one strong feature, such as statement boots, a bright scarf, metallic jewelry, or a graphic jacket” (Gigwise).

Shoes you can last the night in

“Comfy sneakers are a must for a standing show” (Green Wedding Shoes). Gigwise: “Choose shoes you have already worn”, and “Break in new boots for at least two weeks before wearing them to a show”. Seated changes it: Gigwise picks “strappy heels or platform sneakers, depending on how much standing you expect”, so the planner only suggests heels for a seated show.

The layer, by the temperature at showtime

“Concert temperatures can change quickly, especially when moving between outdoor lines and crowded indoor spaces. Pick a layer that is easy to remove, carry, or tie around your waist” (Gigwise). For a winter show indoors, Klodsy’s advice is to “Dress for the indoor temperature as your base layer” and add outerwear you can carry or check. The four bands are ours: hot from 80°F (27°C), warm from 65°F (18°C), cool from 50°F (10°C), cold below.

Outdoors, plan for more than the forecast: Red Rocks Amphitheatre tells its visitors that shows happen “in all elements of Colorado weather”, including “full exposure to the sun, strong winds and even severe rain or snow” (Red Rocks FAQ). In rain, a poncho or a hooded jacket works in a crowd; check your venue’s own page before you pack an umbrella.

The stadium rule is the NFL’s: “Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12″ x 6″ x 12″”, or a “One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag”, and “Small bags, non-clear bags that do not exceed 4.5″ x 6.5″ in size, with or without a handle or strap can be taken into the stadium with one of the clear plastic bags” (NFL bag policy). Stadiums use it for concerts too: “For all events at SoFi Stadium, permitted bags should be clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and cannot be bigger than 12″ x 6″ x 12″” (SoFi Stadium), which adds that the “Bag policy may vary per event”. Arenas, clubs and festivals publish their own sizes, and they differ, so the planner tells you to check the venue’s page rather than guess a number.

      Bring earplugs

Concerts run at 94 to 110 decibels, and “long or repeated exposure to sounds at or above 85 dBA can cause hearing loss” (NIH, NIDCD). The CDC: “When you can’t avoid loud noise, use hearing protection.” Earplugs made for music fit in any bag above.

      Four worked examples

Country at an open-air stadium, standing, 62°F: denim and a plaid or chambray shirt, with western boots you have broken in, plus a jacket over a warm layer; a clear bag up to 12 × 6 × 12 in, or a clutch up to 4.5 × 6.5 in.

Rock at an amphitheatre, seated, 55°F with rain: dark denim and a band tee, with combat boots or ankle boots, plus a jacket over a warm layer and a poncho; a bag that fits under your seat.

Pop in an arena, standing, 30°F outside: something that sparkles, and one statement piece, with platform sneakers or chunky boots, plus a coat you can check; a small crossbody bag, after checking the arena’s page.

Hip-hop in a club, 85°F: relaxed streetwear, like baggy denim or cargos and an oversized top, with fresh, clean sneakers, and no extra layer: a crowd indoors is warm.

      Common mistakes

      • New shoes on the night. Hours on your feet find every rub: wear shoes you have already worn, and break new boots in first.
      • A big bag at a stadium. Anything over the clear-bag size is turned away at the gate; the one exception is a small clutch.
      • Dressing for the queue, not the show. Indoors, a crowd heats the room: wear the outfit for inside and carry or check the coat.
      • Forgetting the sun goes down. An outdoor show that starts warm often ends cool; a layer you can tie round your waist costs nothing.
      • No earplugs. Concerts are well past the level at which the NIH says hearing can be harmed.

      FAQ

What should I wear to a concert?

Something that fits the music and shoes you can stand in for hours: denim and western boots for country, dark denim, a band tee and boots for rock, something that sparkles for pop, relaxed streetwear and clean sneakers for hip-hop. Add a layer you can take off, and carry the bag your venue allows.

What are some easy concert outfit ideas?

Loose jeans with a top you love and one statement piece work at almost any show. From there, lean into the music: western boots for country, a band tee for rock, sequins for pop, oversized streetwear for hip-hop.

What bag can I bring to a stadium concert?

Under the NFL’s clear-bag rule, which stadiums such as SoFi Stadium apply to concerts too: one clear bag up to 12 × 6 × 12 inches or a one-gallon clear freezer bag, plus a small clutch up to 4.5 × 6.5 inches. Check the stadium’s own page, because the policy may vary by event.

What shoes should I wear to a concert?

Shoes you have already worn: sneakers or broken-in boots for a standing show. Save heels for a seated show. Gigwise’s advice is to break new boots in for at least two weeks first.

What should I wear to an outdoor concert?

Breathable clothes, shoes that can handle grass, sunglasses in daylight, and a layer for after dark: outdoor shows cool down once the sun sets. Below about 65°F add a jacket over a warm layer, and a poncho if rain is forecast.

What should I bring to a concert?

Your ticket, your phone, a payment card, ID and earplugs, in a bag your venue allows. Concerts run at 94 to 110 decibels, above the 85 at which the NIH says long or repeated exposure can harm hearing.

Can I wear jeans to a concert?

Yes, at almost any show. Green Wedding Shoes’ favourite concert jeans are “loose-fitting and laid-back”, so you can move and dance in them.
