  • Between two sizes? Nike and Veja both say take the larger one, and Dr. Martens says a little big is better than too small (an insole takes up the difference).
  • Sizes can differ between one brand’s own shoes, too: Veja’s size guide has a separate chart for each model (these are its Campo).

No letter means standard. The same letter is a different width for women and men: a D is a women’s wide and a men’s standard. UK brands use their own letters: Clarks’ standard women’s fit is a D, its wide an E. From Wikipedia’s width table and the fit guides of Skechers, Birkenstock and Clarks.

Sizes from the brands’ own charts (Nike, Skechers, Clarks, Dr. Martens, Birkenstock, Veja), checked 2026-09-19. A size is a starting point: try the shoe on.

Quick answer: an EU 39 is a US women’s 8 at five of the six brands here (Skechers calls it a 9), and a US women’s 8 is a US men’s 6 to 7, depending on the brand. Brands don’t use one shared chart, so the converter reads your size in each brand’s own table and shows where they agree and where they don’t. From your foot: measure heel to longest toe, and each brand’s size is the smallest one made for a foot that long.

How to use it

Choose A size, pick the system the size is in (US, UK, EU, or the cm size on Japanese and Nike boxes) and type it. The answer is the size most brands give, and the table under it shows what Nike, Skechers, Clarks, Dr. Martens, Birkenstock and Veja each call the same shoe. To go from women’s to men’s, choose US: the answer is then the other gender’s US size.

Don’t know your size, or buying a brand you have never worn? Choose My foot, measure both feet and type the longer one, in inches or centimetres. Every result has its own link you can save or send.

EU to US women’s shoe sizes, brand by brand

Each column is that brand’s own chart. A dash means the brand doesn’t make that size: Dr. Martens and Birkenstock make whole EU sizes only.

Women’s to men’s shoe sizes

There is no single rule. For a US women’s 8, Nike says men’s 6½, Dr. Martens 7 and Veja 6 (Clarks and Birkenstock start their men’s charts higher). The US has two old scales, one where women’s is men’s plus 1½ and one where it is plus 1 (Wikipedia), and brands also differ in how they turn EU sizes into US ones. Skechers publishes separate women’s and men’s charts that don’t line up, so it is not in this table.

For women, most brands add 2 or 2½ to a UK size to get the US one; Skechers adds 3. For men, most add 1.

How to measure your foot

  1. Tape a sheet of paper to a hard floor, against a wall, and stand on it with your heel touching the wall and your weight on both feet.
  2. Mark the tip of your longest toe. It is not always the big toe.
  3. Measure from the wall to the mark: that is your foot length.
  4. Do the other foot too, and use the longer of the two.
  5. Measure toward the end of the day: feet can swell by up to 8% as the day goes on.

From Nike‘s and Clarks‘ measuring guides and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, which adds: stand while you measure, because your weight spreads your foot, and leave about ½ inch between your longest toe and the tip of the shoe.

What the width letters mean

WidthWomen’sMen’s
Narrow2A (AA)B
StandardB (M)D (M)
WideD (W)2E (EE)
Extra wide2E (EE)4E

No letter means standard: B for women, D for men (Wikipedia). More A’s are narrower and more E’s wider, so 2A is the same as AA. Watch the D: Skechers sells a women’s D as wide and a men’s D as medium. Clarks, a UK brand, has letters of its own: its women’s fits are C narrow, D standard, E wide and EE extra wide. Birkenstock makes just two widths, Regular and Narrow. Nike gives the difference in inches: a wide has about ¼ inch more room around the toes than a regular, an extra wide about ½ inch.

Why brands don’t agree

EU sizes count Paris points of ⅔ cm, while UK and US sizes count barleycorns of ⅓ inch, each from a different starting length (Wikipedia). The steps don’t line up, and every brand rounds the gap its own way. That is why an EU 39 is a US women’s 8 at Nike and a 9 at Skechers, and why even one brand’s shoes can differ: Veja‘s size guide has a separate chart for each model. Use the converter to find your size, then check the brand’s own chart and try the shoe on.

The charts this converter reads, each checked on 2026-09-19: Nike (women’s, men’s), Skechers, Clarks (US women’s, US men’s, UK), Dr. Martens, Birkenstock and Veja.

Once you know your size, see what to wear it with on Needle Style: boots with jeans, Hoka sneaker outfits, ballet flats with wrap tops and knee-high boot looks.

FAQ

What is a US women’s 8 in EU sizes?

An EU 39 at five of the six brands here: Nike, Clarks, Dr. Martens, Birkenstock and Veja. Skechers calls it an EU 38.

What is EU 39 in US shoe sizes?

A US women’s 8 at five of the six brands, and a 9 at Skechers. In men’s sizes, an EU 39 is a 6 to 7, depending on the brand.

How do I convert women’s to men’s shoe sizes?

Take 1½ off at Nike and Clarks, 1 at Dr. Martens and 2 at Veja and Birkenstock, so a women’s 8 is a men’s 6½, 7 or 6. Choose US in the converter to see each brand’s answer for your size.

What is my US size in UK sizes?

For women, 2 or 2½ smaller at most brands (a US women’s 8 is a UK 5½ at Nike and Clarks and a UK 6 at Dr. Martens and Veja), and 3 smaller at Skechers. For men, most brands take off 1.

How do I find my shoe size from my foot length?

Stand on paper with your heel against a wall, mark your longest toe and measure from the wall to the mark. Do both feet and use the longer. Then choose My foot in the converter: each brand’s size is the smallest one made for a foot that long.

What if I’m between two sizes?

Go up. Nike and Veja both say take the larger size, and Dr. Martens says a little big is better than too small, because an insole can take up the difference.

What does 2E mean on shoes?

Width. For men, 2E (also written EE) is wide and 4E extra wide; for women, 2E is extra wide. Standard, with no letter, is B for women and D for men.
