Quick answer: tap a colour, a length, a texture and a fringe, and the drawn head above wears the look, free and with no photo. Natural colours carry their number on colourists’ 1–10 scale, from level 1 black to level 10 lightest blonde. To See the Look on your own face, the AI picture redraws only your hair from a photo you add, for 2 credits.
How to use it
Pick a colour from the swatches, then the length, the texture (straight, wavy or curly), a fringe and, if you like, a balayage that lightens the ends. The head redraws on every tap and the link keeps your look, so you can send it to a friend or your stylist. Under the answer are Needle Style’s own photo posts for that colour and that length, to see it on real hair.
Hair colour levels, 1 to 10
Colourists describe how dark or light hair is on one scale, from level 1, black, to level 10, the lightest blonde (StyleSeat, TENAJ Salon Institute, In The Cut Hair Studio):
| Level | Colour |
|---|---|
| 1 | Black |
| 2 | Darkest brown |
| 3 | Dark brown |
| 4 | Medium brown |
| 5 | Light brown |
| 6 | Dark blonde |
| 7 | Medium blonde |
| 8 | Blonde |
| 9 | Light blonde |
| 10 | Lightest blonde |
The names are StyleSeat’s chart. The charts differ on level 8: TENAJ Salon Institute calls it light blonde and In The Cut Hair Studio medium blonde; all three call level 9 light blonde. Auburn, copper, burgundy, silver grey and pastel pink are tones, not depths, so they have no level here. The swatches’ colours on screen are ours: a screen cannot show a dye’s real shade, so judge a dye on a strand, not on a picture.
Hair lengths: where each cut falls
| Cut | Where it falls | Length from the roots |
|---|---|---|
| Pixie | Ear length | 4 in |
| Chin-length bob | Chin length | 6–10 in |
| Shoulder length | Shoulder length | 10–12 in |
| Long | Armpit length | 15–16 in |
| Very long | Mid-back length | 16–18 in |
The landmarks and inches are our hair length chart’s, from two hair-length charts and shown as a range where they differ. It also counts the months to grow from one length to the next.
See it on your own photo
The drawn head is free and needs no photo. To see the look on your own face, open the AI picture under the answer, add a clear, front-facing photo and tap the button: the AI keeps your face, features and skin tone as they are and redraws only your hair, in the colour and cut you picked. It costs 2 credits. Your photo is sent to our AI provider only when you tap, to draw the picture, and is not kept. The picture is an idea of the look, not a promise of what a dye or a cut will do on your hair.
Three worked examples
A copper bob: copper is a tone, so it has no level; a chin-length bob falls at the chin, about 6–10 in from the roots.
A platinum pixie: lightest blonde is level 10, the top of the scale; a pixie is ear length, about 4 in from the roots.
Long, wavy medium blonde with balayage: medium blonde is level 7; long hair reaches the armpits, about 15–16 in from the roots; the balayage draws the ends lighter than the roots.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a dye by a screen. Every screen shows colour differently, and a dye also mixes with the colour already in your hair: take the level and the name to a colourist, or test a strand.
- Measuring length from the ends. Lengths are measured from the roots, so a shoulder-length cut is about 10–12 in of hair, whatever your height.
- Reading the AI picture as a promise. It shows the look on your face; the result on your own hair depends on its colour, texture and history.

What do hair colour levels mean?
How dark or light the hair is, on a scale from level 1, black, to level 10, the lightest blonde. Colourists use it with the shade’s tone, such as ash, golden or copper.
How long is shoulder-length hair?
About 10–12 inches from the roots, by two hair-length charts.
Which colours are not on the 1–10 scale?
Tones and fashion colours: auburn, copper, burgundy, silver grey and pastel pink. The scale measures depth, from black to the lightest blonde.
