Quick answer: a gold, platinum or silver ring can usually be resized up or down by up to two sizes. A plain gold band costs about $30–$120 to make smaller and $50–$170+ to make bigger, by three US jewellers’ published prices; silver costs less, and stones part way round the band lift it to $100–$200 or more. Tungsten, titanium, full eternity bands and tension settings usually can’t be resized.
How to use it
Tap the ring’s metal, its stones, whether it needs to be smaller or bigger and by how many sizes (the Ring Size Chart finds your size from a ring you own or your finger). The calculator says whether a jeweller can resize it, shows each jeweller’s published price for that metal and that direction with our range across them, draws what the jeweller does to the band, and says how long it takes, who resizes free, and what to do if it can’t be resized.
What it costs to resize a ring, by metal
Three US jewellers publish their prices: Fort Worth Custom Jewelers for gold by direction, Billig Jewelers by metal and by design, and Fitzgerald Jewelry, in Brooklyn, by metal. The range is the lowest and the highest of them, for a plain band and one size.
| Metal | Smaller | Bigger |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow or rose gold | $30–$120 | $50–$170+ |
| White gold | $30–$120+ | $50–$170+ |
| Platinum | $50–$120 | $50–$170+ |
| Sterling silver | $25–$80 | $25–$130+ |
Fort Worth Custom Jewelers charges $30 to $60 to size a gold ring down and $50 to $150 to size it up. Billig Jewelers charges $25–$50 for a plain silver band and $50–$100 for a standard gold or platinum ring. Fitzgerald Jewelry lists sizing down at $80 for sterling silver, $100 for 14k gold and $120 for 18k gold or platinum, and sizing up at the same plus metal cost from $50 for every full size. Three things raise the price:
- Stones part way round the band (pavé, half eternity): Billig Jewelers charges $100 to $200 and up for rings with multiple stones or intricate settings; Fort Worth Custom Jewelers says the more gems in a ring, the more it costs to size.
- White gold: the rhodium plating is redone after the work, and Fort Worth Custom Jewelers and Billig Jewelers both say it adds to the price; neither prints a number, so the white gold row is gold’s with the top left open.
- More than one size up: sizing up adds new metal, from $50 for every full size at Fitzgerald Jewelry. The calculator adds it to the top of the range for each size past the first.
The range across the price lists, and the way the calculator adds these three, are ours; each jeweller’s own price is shown beside it. Every price above is in US dollars.
Which rings can be resized?
| The ring | Can it be resized? | Who says so |
|---|---|---|
| Plain gold, platinum or silver band | Yes, by up to two sizes | Robinsons Jewelers, Diamonds.pro, Blue Nile |
| Solitaire (one stone, plain band) | Yes | Ken & Dana Design, Brilliant Earth |
| Half eternity or pavé | Usually, with care | GIA, Element 79, Robinsons Jewelers |
| Full eternity (stones all round) | Usually not | Blue Nile, Robinsons Jewelers, GIA, Brilliant Earth |
| Tension setting | No | TJ Diamond, Beyond 4Cs |
| Tungsten | No | Blue Nile, Larson Jewelers |
| Titanium | Usually not | Blue Nile, Beyond 4Cs, Brilliant Earth |
A jeweller cuts the band at the bottom to resize it, so a ring needs plain metal there. GIA says rings with pavé and channel settings cannot be resized easily and full eternity bands can be very difficult; Robinsons Jewelers works in the plain section of a half or three-quarter eternity band instead. A tension setting holds its stone by squeezing it with the band, so changing the band’s size changes the grip (TJ Diamond). Blue Nile lists tungsten and titanium among the rings that can’t be resized; Larson Jewelers says tungsten carbide doesn’t bend for resizing, and most makers include size exchanges in their warranties; Beyond 4Cs calls titanium, tungsten and stainless steel nearly impossible to resize, and Brilliant Earth exchanges its titanium rings instead.
How many sizes can a ring be resized?
Up to two, up or down. Robinsons Jewelers calls one to two sizes a standard, low-risk job and anything more a consultation, and Diamonds.pro says a ring can normally go up to two sizes smaller or larger, and Blue Nile resizes most rings within two sizes. Past two sizes the calculator gives no price: the published ones are for a standard resize, so ask a jeweller to look at it.
How a ring is resized, and how long it takes
To make a ring bigger, the jeweller cuts the band at the bottom, lets in a small piece of matching metal, solders it and polishes it smooth. To make it smaller, they take a small piece out of the band and join the ends again (Blue Nile, Diamonds.pro). Billig Jewelers quotes 1–3 business days for a simple gold band, 1–2 weeks for a standard resize and 1–3 weeks for an intricate engagement ring; Blue Nile says a few days to two or more weeks, longer for rings with intricate settings or many stones.
Free resizing
If the ring is new, ask the seller first: Blue Nile resizes one ring free within the first year of purchase, and Brilliant Earth once within 60 days, or within a year if the new size is inside its sizing range. James Allen’s resizing page now opens Blue Nile’s.
Ring too big and it can’t be resized?
Make it smaller from the inside, with no cut in the band (Statement Collective, Fort Worth Custom Jewelers, Brilliant Earth):
- Sizing beads: two small metal beads a jeweller solders inside the band; they hold the ring higher on your finger and stop it spinning.
- A spring insert: a small sprung metal strip a jeweller fits inside the band; it flexes to pass your knuckle, then holds the ring snug.
- A ring guard or an adjuster: a guard that clips round the band, or a silicone or plastic adjuster that slips inside it; quick and reversible, a fix for now (Fort Worth Custom Jewelers warns that clip-on guards can damage a ring worn with them for long).
Three worked examples
A plain gold wedding band, one size smaller: yes, about $30–$120 and 1–3 business days at the jeweller’s.
A white gold solitaire, two sizes bigger: yes, about $50–$220 or more: gold’s price, the rhodium plating on top and $50 or more for the second size of new metal; about 1–2 weeks.
A tungsten band that is too big: no, tungsten rings can’t be resized; sizing beads, a spring insert or a ring guard make it smaller from the inside.
Common mistakes
- Paying for a resize the seller would do free. Check the receipt date first: Blue Nile resizes free in the first year, Brilliant Earth in the first 60 days, or the first year inside its sizing range.
- Asking for three or four sizes in one go. Most jewellers stop at two, to protect the ring; past that, ask a jeweller to look at it before you pay for anything.
- Forgetting white gold’s plating. The rhodium is redone after the work, and it is part of the bill.
- Measuring on a cold morning. Fingers are smaller in the cold and larger at the end of the day, so measure then (the Ring Size Chart shows how) before you settle on a new size.

FAQ
How much does it cost to resize a ring?
About $25–$170 for a plain band, one size, by three US jewellers’ prices: $30–$120 to make a gold band smaller and $50–$170 or more to make it bigger, a little less for silver, plus the rhodium for white gold. Stones part way round the band lift it to $100–$200 or more.
How long does it take to resize a ring?
A few days for a simple band; Billig Jewelers quotes 1–3 business days for a simple gold band, 1–2 weeks for a standard resize and 1–3 weeks for an intricate engagement ring.
How many sizes can a ring be resized?
Up to two sizes, up or down. Past two, most jewellers want to see the ring first: Diamonds.pro says many stop at two sizes to protect the ring’s structure.
Can tungsten rings be resized?
No. Blue Nile says tungsten and titanium can’t withstand the resizing process, and Beyond 4Cs calls them nearly impossible to resize. Larson Jewelers says most makers include size exchanges in their warranties, so ask the seller for a new size instead.
Can eternity rings be resized?
A full eternity band, with stones all the way round, usually can’t: there is no plain metal to cut. A half eternity or pavé band usually can, carefully, in its plain part.
Can white gold rings be resized?
Yes, like yellow gold, with the rhodium plating redone after the work. That adds to the bill (Fort Worth Custom Jewelers, Billig Jewelers), so roughly $30–$120+ to make it smaller and $50–$170+ to make it bigger, the plating on top.
What can I do if my ring is too big?
Have it resized smaller if it can be; if it can’t, a jeweller can solder sizing beads or fit a spring insert inside the band, and a ring guard or silicone adjuster works straight away.
