What the style guides say
Pieces to look for
The aesthetics, what defines them and their pieces from Vendoo, LitLookz Studio, Gyaru Style and Stylist. Checked 2026-10-07. The questions and the scoring are ours.
Quick answer: your aesthetic is the style your clothes already lean toward — old money, boho, minimalist, preppy, vintage, Y2K, streetwear, western, grunge or cottagecore. Tap what you would actually wear in seven quick questions and the quiz names your closest one, the runner-up, what the style guides say defines it, and the pieces to look for.
How to use it
Answer for the clothes you reach for on an ordinary week, not the ones you admire on someone else. Each answer gives a point to the aesthetic whose pieces it names. The answer appears after the first tap and sharpens with each one; after three it stops saying “so far”. Every result has its own link and its own pin.
The ten aesthetics
Each aesthetic as at least two style guides define it: Vendoo, LitLookz Studio, Gyaru Style and, for western, Stylist. The quiz shows all their words for your result.
| Aesthetic | In a guide’s words | Defined by |
|---|---|---|
| Old money | “Old Money is inspired by understated and timeless fashion associated with generational wealth. The aesthetic favors classic tailoring, muted colors, and high-quality wardrobe staples over flashy logos.” (Vendoo) | Vendoo, Gyaru Style, LitLookz |
| Boho | “Boho fashion draws inspiration from relaxed, artistic, and nature-oriented styles. Flowing fabrics, earthy colors, layered jewelry, embroidery, fringe, wide-leg trousers, and patterned dresses can all contribute.” (Gyaru Style) | Gyaru Style, Vendoo |
| Minimalist | “Minimalist fashion focuses on simplicity, clean lines, and timeless wardrobe staples. Instead of bold prints or statement pieces, this aesthetic emphasizes quality fabrics, neutral colors, and versatile silhouettes.” (Vendoo) | Vendoo, Gyaru Style |
| Preppy | “Preppy fashion is inspired by classic American collegiate style and remains one of the most timeless style aesthetics in 2026.” (Vendoo) | Vendoo, LitLookz, Gyaru Style |
| Vintage | “The Vintage aesthetic is like a love letter to the past, primarily drawing inspiration from the 1920s to the 1970s.” (LitLookz) | LitLookz, Gyaru Style |
| Y2K | “Y2K fashion takes inspiration from late-1990s and early-2000s style.” (Gyaru Style) | Gyaru Style, LitLookz, Vendoo |
| Streetwear | “Streetwear blends athletic fashion, skate culture, hip-hop, and contemporary urban style into one of the most influential fashion movements today.” (Vendoo) | Vendoo, Gyaru Style |
| Western | “Western fashion is inspired by the American frontier and classic cowboy culture.” (Vendoo) | Vendoo, Stylist |
| Grunge | “Grunge, a term coined in the late 1980s, is synonymous with the raw, rebellious spirit of rock music and the Pacific Northwest’s rainy vibes.” (LitLookz) | LitLookz, Gyaru Style |
| Cottagecore | “Cottagecore romanticizes country living through soft, vintage-inspired fashion. Florals, puff sleeves, gingham, lace, embroidery, woven textures, and flowing dresses are staples of this aesthetic.” (Vendoo) | Vendoo, LitLookz, Gyaru Style |
How the quiz decides
The questions are ours. Every answer names pieces, colours or words that the guides list for an aesthetic — the blazer and loafers of old money, the cowboy boots and fringe of western — and gives that aesthetic a point. Not every aesthetic can be picked in every question (no shoe answer is cottagecore’s), so each aesthetic’s points are divided by the points it could have had: the percentage in the bars is that fair share. The highest share wins; a tie gives you both.
Worked examples
A blazer and loafers, muted colours, pearls: four answers, and three of them also fit minimalist or preppy — but old money is the only aesthetic all four name. Old money.
A flowing embroidered dress, soft florals, a woven basket, the countryside, “romantic”: Cottagecore, with boho as the runner-up because the flowing dress fits both.
A hoodie, combat boots and plaid: streetwear gets the hoodie, grunge the boots, and the plaid counts for both grunge and preppy — so Grunge, two of three. Mixed answers give a mixed result; the bars show how close it is.
What to do with your aesthetic
Start with one piece from the list and wear it with what you own. Needle Style has old money outfits, salty granola (boho) outfits, vintage outfit ideas, Y2K outfits, cowgirl style outfits and streetwear outfit ideas. To build a wardrobe around it, the free Capsule Wardrobe Planner; for the colours that suit you, the Color Season Quiz; for your lines, the Kibbe Body Type Test.
FAQ
What is my aesthetic?
The style your wardrobe already leans toward. The quiz above names it from seven answers about the outfits, colours, shoes and accessories you would actually wear.
What is my clothing style?
One of the ten aesthetics the quiz knows — or a mix of two. Most people lean to one and borrow from a second; the runner-up in your result is that second.
What are the main fashion aesthetics?
The quiz uses ten that Needle Style writes about: old money, boho, minimalist, preppy, vintage, Y2K, streetwear, western, grunge and cottagecore. The guides list many more “cores” — coquette, dark academia, balletcore — most of them close relatives of these ten.
How do I find my personal style?
Look at what you already wear most, save outfits you love and look for what repeats. Gyaru Style suggests collecting 20 to 30 examples before deciding; the quiz is a quicker first pass.
Can you have two aesthetics?
Yes. When your answers fit two equally, the quiz says so, and a single tie-breaking answer usually settles it. Many guides describe aesthetics that overlap — old money with preppy, boho with cottagecore.
Is this quiz scientific?
No — it is a style quiz. The aesthetics and their pieces are the style guides’; the questions and the scoring are ours, and they say so.
